write a discussion

For this week’s class discussion, we’ll focus on ethical issues. As IT professionals, you’ll be faced with ethical dilemmas involving information access, use of resources, etc. It is important that you know about ethical frameworks that can help you make a decision that show you at your best.

For this discussion, find an overview ethical frameworks (many universities have good online guides, set Google to restrict search results to only .edu domains). Review the common ethical frameworks (depending on your source, there will be about 5-7) and select the one you most closely identify with. Alternatively, you may select one of the codes of ethics that are available for IT professionals (for example, from ACM, IEEE, (ISC)2, ISSA, SANS, …). Next, you will research a case of unethical behavior that was IT-related (perhaps by an IT professional, but otherwise mainly perpetrated using IT). Using your selected framework or code of ethics, determine which principle or ethical guideline was violated. Formulate the approach you would have taken to resolve the ethics issue or address the situation in a manner that would be considered ethical.

Some students in the past have used a university’s code of conduct. That’s not what I mean by ethical frameworks and the suggestion to restrict your search to edu domains shouldn’t be interpreted to mean that you should find only higher ed cases, frameworks, or codes of conduct. Searching edu domains for ethical frameworks usually results in higher quality results than searching the Internet at large.

Note: this exercise will take you a while to complete because reviewing ethical frameworks and considering the impact of a choice are hard things to do. Do not rush through it! Instead, create a draft, reflect on it and refine it over a few days’ time.

For follow-up discussion, you can take your chosen ethical dilemma and attempt to resolve it using the ethical framework or code of ethics from another student. You may also challenge someone’s solution to their ethical dilemma if you think they may not have applied the framework or code correctly.

Remember, opinion is a natural element of these discussions – but they have to be informed and reasoned. An opinion has no value if there is a lack of support from evidence (such as facts or experience).

Discussion: Your initial post is only the first part of the discussion assignment. Your responses (at least two (2) are required) to other students’ articles can be supportive or a rebuttal (but always constructive and respectful) backed up by statements and facts. You can add to the discussion by highlighting additional facts, finding new viewpoints and interpretations or demonstrating how the information can be applied.

Sources: You’ll have two types of sources for this discussion: the source of your ethical framework or code of ethics and the source of the case of unethical behavior.

Grading: see the discussion board grading rubric that will be used for this course in the Syllabus area.
