Analyze how General Mills represents and advances the goals of its stakeholders:

General Mills Inc. has been in business, officially, since June 20, 1928 with CEO James Ford Bell at the lead (General Mills, n.d.). In 1866, a man named Cadwallader Washburn began a flour mill on the banks of the Mississippi River and with many life changing events, turning a profit became difficult (General Mills, n.d.). As soon as Mr. Bell changed the direction of the company to include other types of food, General Mills was established (General Mills, n.d.).

It’s extremely important for a business or organization to communicate to their stakeholders because their “opinions and actions will directly impact the project outcome” (Jordev, 2016, para.1). Getting the stakeholders educated and on the same page as the business saves time, money, and resources. Linton (2019) explains that there are different stakeholders so therefore there are different interests, attitudes, and priorities so continuous communication will help to assure effective outcomes and positive or trustworthy relationships with the business (para.1).

General Mills has always tried to take care of the needs of their consumers with quality food and making sure to keep their stakeholders informed every step of the way (General Mills, 2019). This is done through ways such as quarterly or annual financial reports, board meetings, websites, social media, surveys, and magazines.

General Mills has a variety of stakeholders (both internal and external) ranging from consumers, employees, suppliers, investors, farmers, government and the community as well as others directly or indirectly (. How General Mills represents and advances the goals of its stakeholders is though communication, transparency, community interaction, and working together (General Mills, 2019). General Mills also tries to build relationships with the stakeholders so that they can be a more rounded and diverse organization both locally and globally (General Mills, 2019). One aspect that General Mills is investing in is the welfare of their staff, planet and animals. By being engaged with the stakeholders, a company can be more in line with their objectives, goals, vision, and direction.

Since its inception, General Mills has always strived to take care of its consumer’s nutritional needs. As they continue to do this, General Mills also seeks to keep their stakeholders involved in the process to ensure they are satisfied with the direction of the company. Stakeholders hold much ground with corporations. Stakeholders can be anyone from customers to business partners. Stakeholders have some influence on the business day to day progress. The stakeholders of General Mills are no different from any other stakeholder. They want the company to be more efficient and self-sustaining. They want the company to have the right quality products that are nutritious and affordable. They also wish General Mills to continue to be a leader for communities around the world. To ensure that stakeholders know what is going on in the organization, General Mills has released an annual report of its efforts to stakeholders for the past 46 years (General Mills Making Foods People Love April 13, 2016)

As a food company, General Mills recognizes that consumers around the world seek nutritious, convenient and affordable food for themselves and their families every day. General Mills believes that proper nutrition is essential for overall health and wellness.

Since the company implemented its U.S. Health Metric in 2005, more than 1,000 products are nutritionally improved. In 2010, General Mills accelerated the company’s sodium reduction efforts by pledging to reduce sodium 20 percent in 10 key U.S. retail product categories by 2015, and by the end of 2015 the company met or exceeded its goal in seven out of 10 categories and made significant progress in the other three (General Mills Making foods People Love April 13, 2016)

Similarly, in response to consumers’ changing preferences, in 2015 General Mills committed to removing artificial flavors and colors from artificial sources from all of the company’s cereals by the end of 2017.

For General Mills, the company has developed an understanding with its customers. To fulfill the demands, General Mills created a health profile, sustainable sourcing commitment, and climate and water stewardship effort. One of the many goals of stakeholders was to change the background of several of the products sold by General Mills. General Mills shifted in the ingredients added to products and began to discontinue to use of artificial flavors. General Mills also moved toward sustainability. In this case, General Mills is hoping to sustain all of its ten priority ingredients by the year 2020 (General Mills Making Foods People Love April 13, 2016) Also, the company is limiting its greenhouse emissions as well as conserving its water usage, making General Mills very Eco-friendly. General Mills has also continued to develop its relationship of consumers around the world by becoming involved with human rights and animal welfare.
