Week 12, Post 1: Latent functions of Education and the Hidden Curriculum
Our lesson covers latent, or hidden, functions of education. The examples include:
- matchmaking (finding a spouse),
- restricting certain activities (students are trained to behave and follow directions and be disciplined), and
- creation of a generation gap (keeping kids out of the workplace longer).
The hidden curriculum, which refers to “… the transmission of cultural values and attitudes, such as conformity and obedience to authority, through implied demands found in rules, routines, and regulations of schools,” is also mentioned.
Discuss your own experiences with the latent functions of education, and a possible hidden curriculum. Add any other latent functions to the list that you can think of. Looking back, how much of an impact have these hidden lessons had on your school life, your work life, and your home life? What is flawed about these hidden lessons? What is good about these hidden lessons?
