Assignment Context
Each student will conduct two (2) counseling sessions, (on different days) with a child or adolescent. Students will develop a case conceptualization, and reflect on professional counseling skills. Your first Video Counseling Assignment was due in Module 5, the second video counseling assignment, will be your final key assignment and is due at the end of Module 9.
First students should determine if they wish to interview a child or an adolencent (please see the options below). Keep in mind that based on your decision, you will then conduct another interview with a child or adolencent of the same age in Module 9 for your final assessment. Always remember that when you are working with minors, you want to obtain informed consent before you begin counseling services – please follow the directions below.
During the video recorded interview, you may position the video so that the child’s face is not in view. In both sessions, approach your “client†in a developmentally appropriate manner and use an age appropriate activities. Confidentiality will be maintained by using only the first name of the client. (Length for each session 15-20 minutes).
Adolescent: If you select an adolescent, they must be between the 12 -18 years of age. You must also obtain permission from both the adolescent (12-17) and his or her parent/legal guardian. Follow the same rules for using video as discussed above – confidentiality will be maintained by using only the first name of the client.
You are to conduct two sessions (different days) with an adolescent (12-18 years of age). The first session will be an intake interview and an opportunity to build rapport with your client. The second session will be to create an intervention that utilizes play or art that is age- and development-appropriate for your client. (Length for each session 25-30 minutes).
You will be graded on your ability to connect with the “client,†your written case conceptualization, your ability to adapt as needed from the first session to the second and your final write up/ assessment of your work, which is to include a description of your intent/focus, an honest assessment of how you think you did, what you think went well, what could have gone better, and what you think the next steps would be with this individual.
