This chapter provides a more intensive overview of knowledge characteristics and principles and the ways knowledge may be enhanced in businesses. The main approaches to building organisational knowledge processes are explored, along with some of the key principles which enable the development of strategic knowledge management. We briefly examine the type of work that knowledge workers perform before looking in detail at the five stages of organisational knowledge development: knowledge sourcing, knowledge abstraction, knowledge conversion, knowledge diffusion, and knowledge development and refinement. This creation of organisational knowledge is influenced by the organisation’s managerial, technical and social infrastructure. Every organisation faces the challenge of identifying the knowledge that is of strategic business value and ensuring that knowledge is captured and shared. Strategic knowledge management requires the organisation to pay attention to planning, people, processes, products and performance (the five Ps), and build the necessary knowledge characteristics into the overall organisational strategy. m Knowledge workers As chapter 1 illustrated, the nature of work has evolved rapidly towards service and knowledge-related contexts, which has led to the emergence of knowledge workers.
