For this assignment, you are required to design an impedance matching network using a fewsections of 50 ohm transmission line, with capacitors connected to ground. The book showsthe hardware in Figure 8-19.
Its your choice how many capacitors and transmission line sections you use, but rememberthe more you use the more complex the optimization design is (more free variables andmore complex search space).
Your load ZL you can choose, but it has to be complex, with both the real and imaginaryparts having significant values, and it does not change over frequency (this is anapproximation, in practice it will change).
The input impedance Zin leads to a reflection coefficient (relative to 50 ohm feedingtransmission line Z0) as a function of frequency. The specification of the desired reflectioncoefficient and the operating bandwidth you can choose. For example a typical reflectionversus frequency is plotted in Figure 8-9 a) in the book where the bandwidth is very small.So you need to do much better than this. What we want to see is a reflection coefficientthat has small ripple over a finite bandwidth. So the reflection coefficient must stay in acertain range over the selected bandwidth. The range and bandwidth you can choose.
If you choose a trivial complexity design specification, you will loose marks. But don’tchoose an overly complex design specification, as then you won’t get it working becauseyou will need many capacitors, and the optimization will be very complex.
Finally, this project is under exam conditions, so you and your partner cannot discuss thisassignment in any way or medium with any other student, group or person – except yourlecturer. But you can make use of any written resource online. Provide a copy of yourcomputer code in the report. You can use any software platform to write your own code,but you cannot use commercial impedance matching design software.
