Remembrance

Remembrance

Please listen to April, 2015 interview with NPR journalist Scott Simon entitled \”We Don\’t Fully Grow Up Until we Lose our Parents\” (transcript available at site). In it, he details the last few days of his mother\’s life.  While sitting with her in her hospital room, Mr. Scott sent a series of live tweets, and as such his followers were privy to intimate moments in his life.  Here he recalls the power of sending those tweets, the connections he made to his mother, her life, and their shared history, and to the followers with whom he shared these thoughts.

For this discussion, please find your own example of a form of social media remembrance – something other than an obituary. Then post responses to the following using the course content to frame your response:

  1. Describe the remembrance (perhaps it is an act or an event)
  2. Detail the audience(s) for whom it is intended and how it might serve to assist the individual(s) experiencing the loss
  3. Consider the following:  How “real†are we on social media?  How might its use change our interaction with our own losses and the losses of others?
  4. Respond to at least two of your classmates using course material to frame your responses.
