project proposal
The goals of this phase are for you to identify an interface you would want to develop.
You are tasked to create human-computer interface that will serve some type of need. There is no specific direction on what this interface can be however, you should pick an environment you are somehow comfortable with it. Here are some examples:
- A dynamic display/message board for a group, organization, business, institution. This display could be for a lobby, or could be an outdoor display
- A website for a group, organization, institution
- A mobile app
- A computer application
- A dynamic campus map, using GPS coordinates (possibly with some superimposed augmented reality)
- A new physical user interface (using 3D printer and pieces of other technologies)
Whatever the technology, it must serve a specific purpose and you must have a clear understanding of the users it will serve. For example, this can be technologies for:
- Students or educators
- Families, children or elderly
- Sports fans
- A business or a group
- The larger public
other user groups are also acceptable.
Research
It is always difficult to create something new. In the class modules, you can find examples of various interfaces that impacted computer use throughout the time. You can also bring your personal experience. For example, is there a website that you believe can be improved? Is there an activity that you believe could be done more efficiently (and more pleasantly) by employing a new interface? Is there a device that you have always struggled with? Now is your choice to improve!
A great location to find research is the HCI Repository or the ACM database (where you can read papers from various conferences). You may also simply search on scholar.google.com. In addition, you can get inspiration from UX Magazine (look at articles and technologies) and previous projects in similar classes (for example: http://milab.idc.ac.il/student-projects/hci-projects/ (Links to an external site.)).
While you can inspire yourself from other projects and examples (and you are encouraged to) you must develop your own novel/new application. The application must have a social impact element, meaning that you must consider how your interface will impact a specific community or the society.
Submission Instructions
For this phase, you must create a proposal for your term projects with the following information:
- Project title/project name
- Your name
- One or two paragraphs describing what problem you will attempt to solve and the benefit it has to society or a specific community. There is no restriction on the type of the interface. If you are working with a client, then describe that client (you should meet with them and discuss the project BEFORE submitting this proposal).
- One paragraph describing your target users.
Submit your proposal on this page. Preferably, submit your assignment as a PDF document, or alternatively as a Word document, or as text.
