PHI103 Disjunctive Syllogism Deductive and Inductive Arguments Assignment
Discussing an argument form
In the required reading this week we learned about deductive and inductive arguments and their forms: modus ponens, modus tollens, hypothetical syllogism, disjunctive syllogism, categorical syllogism, statistical syllogism, argument from analogy, appeal to authority, and inductive generalization.
1. Your initial post (1 post, due by Thursday):
Choose one of these forms (except appeal to authority) and discuss what can make for good arguments of that type. Provide at least one good example and one bad example of this type of argument (both in standard form), and explain what makes each of them good or bad. How do we know if an argument of this form is strong or weak (or valid/invalid in the deductive case) in general? What can we do better to evaluate instances of this form when they occur in daily life?
