Network Visibility

Network Visibility

Answer the following questions about the attached network diagram. Assume that all sensors are setup and functioning correctly. All work groups have the same number of hosts in them.

The following actions are permitted and would not be considered changing the topology:

  • replacing a device like for like – a switch with another switch of different or similar type, same thing with a router
  • moving a network tap – taps do not impact the traffic flowing across the link they duplicate, at least they are not supposed to
  • re-configuring a network device in a way that does not affect the flow of traffic

Actions which change the flow of traffic are considered changing the topology:

  • replacing a switch with a router or vice versa
  • removing a network device that modifies the flow of traffic – switch, router, firewall
  • adding or removing VLANs

This exercise is about gaining visibility into an existing business. So we are not changing the business or its IT model just yet. We are investigating sensor placements and how that affects our abilities.

Questions

  1. For each Sensor identify the IP addresses and/or ranges that the sensor will detect.
  2. Which user groups could security analysts not uniquely identify from sensor data if an alert was detected?
  3. Which sensor will collect the most amount of data?
  4. Which sensor, based on location, will collect the least useful amount of information?
  5. Without adding any additional equipment other than what is already in use. Which one sensor can be moved to provide better network visibility? Specify if any device reconfiguration is needed.
  6. Relocate any sensors or equipment to maximize network visibility of all hosts. The network topology must remain unchanged. Specify if any device reconfiguration is needed.
  7. Maintain maximum visibility while, reducing the total number of sensors to four. You may upgrade or reconfigure any of the equipment in use with anything available in the legend. You may not change the topology of the network. Describe the placement of your sensors and what equipment/configuration changes you made.
