My Personal Development As A Writer Literacy Narrative Essay
My Personal Development As A Writer Literacy Narrative Essay
The purpose of a literacy narrative is to understand how your past literacy
experiences shape your current literacies by telling a story about your literacy history and analyzing the
significance of the story. You’ll have three options for the subject of your literacy narrative: 1) you can write
about past reading and writing experiences (in school or out of school) that have had an impact on your literacy
development, 2) you can write about your most important current literacies (in school or out of school), or 3)
you can write about a person (in school or out of school) who has had an impact on your literacy development.
You can talk about positive impacts and experiences, negative impacts and experiences, or both. Your narrative
should include analysis of the significance of what you’re describing and how your experience(s) have shaped
you as a reader and/or writer.
A literacy narrative is a common genre, especially for creative writers. Literacy narratives are a storytelling
genre where writers use descriptive language and narrative to discuss a significant event or series of events that
shaped their literacies.
As you’ll see when we look at models of literacy narratives, there’s no one tone and style for a literacy
narrative: they can be serious, funny, informal, formal, poetic, concise, angry, celebratory, etc.
