Mr Washington Case Discussion
Submit Assignment: Glory Days
For many, high school athletics will provide fond memories for a student athlete’s entire life. However, there comes a point in time where some students are too old to compete at the high school level. Most state associations have limitations on age that will restrict students that are too old from competing. Clearly, students that fake their age in order to go back to high school are within the meaning of this rule, but so are students that miss a year due to illness, or have to repeat a school year due to academic performance or due to a disability.
For your assignment this week, review the Washington case in your Required Studies and determine whether the NSAA’s rules would produce a similar or different result. In your assignment, thoroughly analyze the language of the applicable NSAA rule and compare it to the structure of the Indiana rule in the 1999 case. In addition, please answer the following questions:
- Do you agree with the court in the Washington case? Why or why not?
- How would you advise your school to handle this situation if you were in Nebraska?
- Are there any rule amendments that could help clarify this type of situation in Nebraska? What about Indiana?
Support your statements with evidence from the required studies and your research.
