Your group project report part 1 – Project Analysis needs to be submitted with a cover page, electronically through Blackboard to the designated forum in the Discussion area on or before the due date. Be sure to include the names of all group members.

Description:

In this phase of the semester project, we will focus on getting started with a team of several students (Objective 6) towards the development of a formal report addressing the needs of a particular area or community within our local metropolitan area (Objective 1). This will be from the perspective of a startup initiative proposing technological solutions for your target area’s problems (be it diagnostic of an existing concern or predictive of looming issues). Choose a particular area within the Baltimore Metropolitan area and identify several major persistent issues within that area in which a technological solution could help substantially address or alleviate an infrastructural deficiency or need. Your team will also need to act as an organization that will propose creative and transformative solutions attuned to civic and human issues, not just tech capacities.

Once your team, area, infrastructural component(s) and metro issue(s) have been identified, your group will need to submit the following information in the form of a report. I would strongly encourage that each point contain substantial detail, explanation and support. This document will serve as a basis for later parts of the semester project and other assignments. Information should conform to APA or MLA style (Objective 2 – the group can pick their preference). If you are unsure of the correct citation style for these formats, please refer to the Cook Library citing sources page on their website. Your resources should come from a variety of domains, as all the topics of the group research paper should include social, cultural, economic, political and technical perspectives (Objective 3). Your list of sources should primarily consist of peer-reviewed scholarly articles, current data and statistics and will inevitably include other essays and reports generated by media and research outlets. Each resource will substantiate the arguments you wish to include in your group research paper, following the sample outline below. It is essential that your information for this phase of the project is well-supported, logical and compelling based on the problem areas you have identified (Objective 4).

The sample outline below is just one of many outline possibilities of how to summarize the report but at least should include the following information. It is up to the group how to present the information, but all points must be addressed. During each phase of the semester project we will be correcting, rethinking, updating and extending the document, moving forward to the final product that will be due at the end of the semester; the group will present to the class on the day of our scheduled final exam.

Outline:

  1. Cover sheet
  2. Executive summary for your mock start-up initiative (approximately 125 words).
  3. Main Components
    1. The Initiative
      1. Description and competitive advantages, if any (approx.. 250 words)
      2. Analysis of target area (approx.. 250 words –include charts/maps as relevant)
      3. Benefits and Opportunities for the Community (approx.. 250 words)
      4. Logo (and logo feedback – comments should be sorted and well-organized to enhance readability)

Cover Sheet, Executive Summary and Table of Contents

The first page of the report is a cover sheet that includes the proposed initiative name, target location, and the names of all members of your group. Be sure to list the group leader/spokesperson first (which will need to be decided by your group).

The second page of the report is a one-page executive summary that summarizes each of the main elements of your initiative and goals and why this proposed idea or service can solve these problems. Consider the following questions:

  • What sort of initiative is it?
  • Where is your targeted area/what are the general problems you hope to solve?
  • What are the product/services/solutions that you will provide to solve the identified problems, and what’s special about your approach?

I. THE INITIATIVE

  1. DESCRIPTION OF GOALS, PURPOSE, MISSION –“ABOUT US” ON A WEBSITE

In this section, provide a detailed description of the initiative. Include your products/services/solutions that will solve these problems, as well as a thorough description of what makes this endeavor necessary and unique. The description should have two main sections: the first describes the goals, purpose, mission, while the second section describes the product /service/solutions you will be offering based on the preliminary data and research you uncover about your selected area.

Include a description of what makes this initiative unique and how or why it’s necessary for enhancing quality of living for the chosen metropolitan area. Emphasize any special features that you feel will appeal to stakeholders and explain how and why these features are appealing.

  2. BENEFITS & OPPORTUNITIES

In this section of the report, demonstrate to mock “potential stakeholders” you have done your “homework” and know the area you are seeking to help. An analysis includes a discussion of the area’s characteristics and trends, projected growth (or decline), resident behavior (groups, neighborhoods, sub-groups), data, trends, complementary products/services, barriers of entry, and so on for your area (Objective 5). You should talk about how similar products/services/solutions have done in the area (if they exist or have been tried before in this area or elsewhere).

  3. LOGO DESIGN

1. As part of the initial “branding” plan, also include a sample logo that will be used to represent your initiative.

2. Survey at least 10 people about your designed logo and report on their response in this document. If you change your logo design based on their gathered responses, include both the old and new design and explain why the changes were made. Report on the comments from those evaluating your logo.
