Letter to your Member of Congress (House Representative or Senator):
This assignment should help you get to know your own member of Congress and work together to resolve a pressing national issue!
This assignment is broken down into two parts:
1. Current Event Articles, 10%: You’ll need to pick a current event about U.S. politics from news outlets to write about. Choose any two news articles about your current event (dated January 1, 2017 or later) from a newspaper, magazine, or other reputable news outlet. Include the links to the article and turn it in with your letter. You must note on there where the articles are from and date of publication, for example, “From New York Times, published May 23, 2017 by author name”
2. Letter, 90%:
You’ll need to write a letter about the current event you’ve chosen,
The letter should…
- be addressed to the correct U.S. Representative or U.S. Senator who represents you in Congress
- explain that you are their constituent and why you are concerned with this issue if any
- describe the current event chosen with some detail and how the authors addressed the issue
- explain what the U.S. Congress has done in the past to address this issue
- explain your position on the issue
- ask for their opinion
- Propose solution(s) to solve the issue in the form of a new bill, amendments to a previous bill, etc. BE SPECIFIC in your proposal.
- Explain why your representative should be convinced with your proposed solution(s) and what objection(s) it may face and from which groups
Format: use language suitable for communicating with a member of Congress.
Letter must be typed, single-spaced, Times New Roman size 12 font, with 1-inch margins on all sides and the body of your letter should be 1 to 2 pages.
