In an article titled “How the Deprivation of Ramadan Helps Care for the Spirit” written by Fariha Roisin of New York Times, the purpose and importance of Ramadan for the Muslim faith is described. It defines Islam as a religion that seeks oneness with God and aims to radiate kindness, humility, and compassion. During Ramadan, Muslims participate in alternate fasting, praying, and seeking refuge with God. Fasting is practiced in order to help one become cleansed and more able to focus and pray. The refuge has to do with creating a boundary from the anger and fear of persecution through fasting and praying. The elements of Ramadan are synergistic and practiced together. Just as Christians have persecuted other Christians in the past, it has and is happened with Muslims persecuting other Muslims as well. Fear of persecution, terrorism, and worries about being targets for Islamophobic non-Muslims are regular concerns for practicing Muslims. Their fear often turns into anger, as fear naturally does, and instead of resonating in the negativity, Muslims seek to be free of it and one with God.

I chose this article because it aims to educate non-Muslims about its religion and some of the practices and beliefs. Education is the key to minimizing cultural and racial hatred and people need to know that there is no reason to be afraid of or hate Muslims. Islam is actually a very peaceful religion and Muslims work very hard to keep closeness with God, as well as to spread his love. Muslims just want to live and be free from persecution just like anyone. It is important as more immigrants come to this country that we aim to understand and coexist with each other peacefully and view one another as equally deserving of these freedoms.
