Culture is something we broadly think of as existing within societies. However, there are specific groups within society that also have a specific culture. Organizational culture (also called corporate culture) is often identified as a culture that exists within a particular organization. This might be the case for your career.
Formal culture norms are those parts of an organizational culture that you must abide by when working within your career. These are the things that are non-negotiable. These are rules found in the company handbook and other policy documents. When you break a formal cultural norm, there will be negative sanctions. An example of a formal cultural norm at UOPX is plagiarism. In the student handbook, it is clear that students are not to plagiarize, and doing so has severe consequences including being expelled from the university.
Informal cultural norms are those parts of an organizational culture that are important and things that members of the organization believe are nice to do, but they are not typically included in the company handbook or other policies. When you break an informal norm you might be looked down upon (a negative sanction) but you will not get fired for doing so. An example of an informal cultural norm at UOPX is to not read the textbook. While you cannot be expelled for not reading the text, you might also not do well on assignments because you don’t understand the terms being discussed. You are breaking a social norm but there are only minor negative sanctions.
