tell me four things we learn from the picture. You may focus on what we learn about the era, or the specific year, the group shown, the technology shown, or any other angle you choose to take. You can also mix and match from those general categories.
For example, if your image is from World War II, you should be teaching me six things about the World War II era based on the picture. Please keep that last part in mind. If your entire discussion is simply a list of facts that you know about World War II, and has little or nothing to do with analyzing the specific content of the picture, you will not do well.
Also, it is important that make sure you explain your idea AND what it was in the picture that led you to that idea. The former is your “idea” and the latter is your “evidence.” If you don’t do both things for each of your four observations, you won’t be successful!
As you work to do these two things for your chosen picture, I encourage you to pay attention to details. Sometimes small details are the most important ones. You should also make certain to be thoughtful and
creative. There really isn’t such a thing as a wrong answer. If the picture puts an idea into your head, go with it. Just explain what it is about the picture that gave you that idea.
Finally, it is appropriate to talk about not only the content of the picture, but also the way it communicates. By that I mean thinking about how the style of the image (words, color, technological sophistication, medium, etc.) reflects something about the era that produced it. For example, President George Washington generally communicated with American citizens via long letters that were published in newspapers. That says something about his era. President Donald Trump generally communicates via Twitter. That says something about our era. Anyhow, you’re free to think about things on this level, if you wish.
