Foreign Aid Impact in Southern Africa Optimization and Analytics

Foreign Aid Impact in Southern Africa Optimization and Analytics

*Ask – create a proposal for this essay, then write the essay.

Your boss at the UNDP has asked you to compare different countries in the 14

countries in the Southern African Development Community (SADC.) She is

interested in a broad range of interventions that could help economic and social well

being in this part of the world. You have heard of a metric call “Human Development

Index” and of other country statistics such as GDP, level of education, investment in

IT, investment in telecommunications, business environment, corruption index, etc.

Your proposal might take the following form:

a) Real World Problem: Describe what problem you are attempting to address.

b) Research Question: State the specific question or questions you aim to answer

(see below)

c) Data & Scope: Outline the source(s) of data needed to develop and test your

model. For each data source, describe the variables and time period for which

values are available. These details could be in an appendix.

d) Model Approach: Describe the modeling technique(s) you will use. If you can,

develop a small illustrative spreadsheet model.

e) Anticipated Results: Outline the anticipated results

f) Real World Impact: Describe the business impact your anticipated results

might have

Research Questions and Hypotheses

Research questions:

  • Determine where and what kind of research you are doing and identify the
  • specific objectives the research will address.

  • Differ as to whether you are conducting applied or basic research and qualitative
  • or quantitative research

  • Focus on a single phenomenon
  • Qualitative Research seeks to understand a phenomenon using, for example qualitative

    case studies.

May have 1 or 2 central research questions

  • Broad – use exploratory words such as “how”, “why” and use exploratory verbs
  • to convey exploratory intent. Do not imply a direction for hypotheses.

    Examples

  • “How and why do manufacturers and retail stores collaborate with each other to
  • sell certain products?”

  • “How are companies adapting their organizational structure to accommodate Big
  • Data?”

  • Sub-questions – say 3 or 4 more specific questions under each research question
  • Quantitative Research involves mathematical analyses of the research topic questions and

inquires about the relationships among variables

Quantitative research questions explore “what”, “where”, or “when.”

    Example:

  • “Is there a relationship between a country’s telecommunications infrastructure
  • (independent variable) and the country’s HDI (dependent variable) controlling for

the effects of GNP (control variable)?”

Quantitative hypotheses are predictions about the expected relationships – they are

    directional and explore causality:

  • “The density of mobile telephone communications in SADC countries is
  • positively related to a country’s HDI”

The next requirement is to describe exactly how the independent and dependent

variables are defined/measured and the sources of the data.
