ETHICAL DILEMMAS IN HR MANAGEMENT

Assume you are a manager for a manufacturing company. For years, your low-wage workers have complained because their jobs are boring. At the same time, you also know that the highly specialized nature of each job maximizes efficiency and allows you to pay relatively low wages (because it’s easy to replace anyone who leaves).

You recently interviewed for a job with another company. Even though you decided not to take the position, you did have a chance to tour and study that firm’s production facilities. You learned that your firm could actually change the jobs in your factory in ways that would make them more stimulating and enjoyable for your workers. But you also know that you would lose a relatively small degree of efficiency. In addition, because the jobs would be a bit more challenging, you might have to pay higher wages.

You have two choices. One is to keep the jobs in your plant as they are currently designed (maximizing efficiency and minimizing wage costs) but keep a bored and disinterested workforce. The other is to redesign the jobs in the plant (losing some efficiency and perhaps increasing labor costs), but your workers would find their jobs more enjoyable and challenging.
