EduGuru Proposal Media Audiences Graded Discussion
EduGuru Proposal Media Audiences Graded Discussion
Suppose we’re working for a media company that wants to build a Web site geared toward college students. There is no shortage of advertisers who want to reach a college audience, so I’ve lined them up; we just need to bring the audience to them.
The main thrust of this venture will be a set of video channels (like a Youtube channel). Your job is to come up with the topics for each of those channels (we’ll end up with 25 different channels, one from each of you, on the site for students to watch). The readings and videos for this module covered the ideas of audience segmentation and the importance of niche audiences. We’ve already segmented the audience a bit by identifying that we’re going after college students, but that’s still a pretty large group with a lot of diverse interests. So your challenge is to come up with a channel that appeals to some niche within that college audience. Notice how well this would work for our company…the Web site advertises itself to college students (and advertisers flock to college students), but then when the students come to the site they’ll be able to find a niche channel or two that really speaks to them and keeps them coming back for more.
In your graded post, then, you need to do two things:
1. Describe the channel you’re proposing. What’s it called? What kind of shows/videos would it have?
2. Describe the audience for this channel. What kind of segmentation are you using (hint: you’re already using demographic segmentation by narrowing it to college students…you’ll just be narrowing it even further)? How would you define and find the group you’re after? Why would the content you’re proposing work for them?
Be unique. Be creative. Read other responses and don’t propose something that’s already been put out there. You can, however, piggyback off of others ideas (maybe there are small groups of channels that would work for certain niche groups?). Explain your ideas. And above all, persuade us that your ideas are good. Think of this as a pitch to the directors of the company that’s putting this all together. You’ll be graded on A) how successful your attempt at persuasion is, and B) how well you apply the course material on audience segmentation.
You can post any time now that this has been released, and you’re welcome to edit your posts (or respond to posts) up until 8pm on Friday. I won’t grade anything until then, and then I’ll grade everything that’s up.
