 How could regulating mental health services impact society overall long-term in regard to
suicide/incarceration/homelessness/poverty/general well-being?
 How could “early detection” of mental health issues change our society?
2. Cultural Stigma
 Consider the rates of reported mental illness among various communities/nations.
 Does the level of social acceptance/rejection seem to correlate with any demographic
variables?
 Do the actions/behaviors of particular public figures significantly influence cultural stigma?
3. Mental Health Services for College Students
 Consider the mental health services available to college students.
 What mental health issues are treated by on-campus counseling services? Do they provide
direct counseling or refer to other resources?
 Are higher education institutions required to provide counseling services?
 Do they have reporting/intervention services? If so, does this infringe on student privacy?
 How could increasing mental health services to a population uniquely vulnerable, such as
“traditional” college-aged students (18 to 24 years old) impact society overall long-term in
regard to suicide/incarceration/homelessness/poverty/general well-being?
 (This topic could also be applied to homeless shelters/veterans services/etc.)
4. Treatment, Not Jail
 Consider the treatment options available to mentally ill inmates. You can focus on inmates
suffering from disorders such generalized anxiety or depression, or on those with more
extreme illnesses such as schizophrenia or dissociative personality disorder. You may also
consider those institutionalized after being judged criminally insane/not guilty by reason of
insanity.
 Are the treatment options reasonable/sufficient? Do they prepare inmates for healthy futures
once released from jail? Should that be a priority?

o at least two well-explained and defended criteria
o an examination of your claim in terms of the stated criteria
o evidence for every part of the argument, not only for your evaluative
claim but also for your criteria selection, particularly if you suspect
your audience may not share your ideas about what is most important.
Use current and relevant research to support your evaluation. Your source
material adds authority to your argument. It should contribute something to
your paper that you cannot: specific facts, clarification or emphasis of a point,
a voice with authority in a specific area, illustration of the controversy or
complexity around your issue.
