Opportunism seems easiest to describe as someone who seeks opportunity to advance. Individualism/collectivism would be easiest defined as a concept that magnifies contributions of the individual or collective group over other contributions. The concepts all can be positive in theory, but can be used to show discrepancies in an organization in the same light. Opportunism takes the opportunity regardless of planning or reason, but simply because there is an opening/chance to take at the given moment, simply taking advantage of circumstances. This may be a good thing for an organization, but could leave any competitors within the same industry at a discrepancy. Partnerships and alliances may also be affected. Individualism will place the individual at the forefront, generally independent doers. Collectivism cultures like China and Korea will place group efforts above the individual; contributing from all for a common objective.
Cultural distance versus institutional distance comes where cultural distance is a function of differences in values and communication styles rooted through culture which may be demographic or organizational. The distance comes into play when individuals or groups perceive their value or style of communications to be different from others. Institutional distance is the similarity or difference between two institutions or countries. The distance comes into play when one country has a different set of government principles, policies, trade agreements, etc. This makes up the integrity of the country which differs from any other in comparison.
