1. Criminologists who study the costs of white-collar crime often distinguish among 1) economic costs, 2) physical costs, and 3) damage to the moral climate. Discuss in detail (with numbers where appropriate) these three types of costs. In the final paragraph, discuss the cost that you consider most injurious to society.
2. Read over the technical reports by the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C, 1999, 2005, 2010) and address the issues below. [Note: do not cut and paste from the technical report.]
– What are the main goals of NW3C’s survey?
– Describe in detail their research methodology for all three waves. – Describe three key findings from each wave.
3. Environmental crimes have received much attention from criminologists. In particular, much research has been conducted on the illegal disposal of waste and hazardous substances by corporations. Explain what it known about this activity and explain 1) why it occurs and 2) how it occurs, and 3) its impact.
4. To understand fully the illegal behavior of corporations, it is important to understand how bureaucracies work. Summarize the material presented in class on the structure and function of bureaucracies. Be sure to highlight the major characteristics and limitations of bureaucracies, as well as how this structure is related to corporate crime. You may also refer to the course readings and related materials.
5. Of the different types of white-collar crimes, antitrust violations have received a great deal of attention from criminologists. More specifically, restrictive trade agreements have been researched in much detail. These include: 1) price fixing, 2) market sharing, and 3) bid rigging. Describe each of these restrictive trade agreements, and include a specific example (real-world or hypothetical) of each. In the final paragraph, explain why antitrust violations are a “hot topic” among researchers.
6. From the video shown in class called “Too Posh To Pay (White-Collar Crime Documentary) – Real Stories”, pick three of the cases discussed and detail the elements of the offenses. Use specific WCC offense types that you have learned to this point. Note: one of the cases you pick must be a street-level one that was mischaracterized in the video. The video may be found at
