Forum: According to the research I did, creating desktop and web-based apps is definitely possible with Access but is, in many cases, discouraged. Access applications can be converted to web applications and this process comes with many benefits. It allows for more expansion of the database or application, puts more of the work load on the client side to avoid straining the server too much, and keeps installation difficulties to a minimum by requiring only the use of a browser as opposed to having to install third party software. Using it from the web also eliminates the issue of version compatibility, as each user will not have to ensure that they have the correct updates to the program in order for the application to function (Richardson, 2007).
Access also allows the use of templates as a sort of jumping-off point for many projects. Mary Richardson at TechRepublic advises that developers use templates – either the ones that come standard with Access or those downloaded from the internet – to make the prototyping process easier, especially in the case of creating an application for a client that isn’t totally sure what he or she wants (Richardson).
Web or desktop applications created with Access are not without their flaws, however. “Microsoft warns that Access is not intended to be used with high-stress, 24×7 server applications, such as web, commerce and transactional servers” (Intermedia, 2014). The primary purpose of Access was to manage databases and information lists for small businesses and offices, and it was not designed to handle applications with more complex logic (Mayfield, n.d.). When the scope of a project or application becomes too large, it can cause problems. Vincent Mayfield at BitWizards outlines a very possible situation when using Access for such a crucial or complex project: the business owner assumes that because Access is powerful it is the best choice for storing the company’s critical information, then people inexperienced with the program begin to edit it and add on to it, and before long the database is huge and contains all of the company’s important information without having been normalized, established relationships, or eliminated redundant data (Mayfield). This results in a needlessly complicated amalgamation of data, tables and records stapled haphazardly to the database, and an increasing number of inexperienced users bogging the database down with extraneous or redundant information.
