Creating an Accessible Website

Lab Creating an Accessible Website

Create a web page, to provide information about your favorite musical group or musical performer. You can choose any content that you want. However, there are specific requirements related to coding.

Page Layout requirement:

Make sure that you create the page using CSS, with at least two “boxes” (one for navigation on the left, and one for the main content on the right).

Required content elements:

  at least two pictures

  one mouseover and mouseout event

  one sound clip

one data table (but NOT a presentation table)

one image map with at least 2 images

Some form of skip navigation (Make sure you make your ‘skip navigation’ visible so that I can test it.)

Accessibility requirements:

Make sure that the web page is fully accessible, according to the guidelines at www.section508.gov. The web guidelines are under 1194.22. This means that you must have:

  alt text for graphics,

  keyboard-friendly equivalents for mouseovers,

  descriptions for sound text,

  appropriate headers for tables,

client side image map with alternative text, and

any requirements for specific element presented on the page

Accessibility evaluation

Use one of the accessibility evaluation software tools to test whether your page is fully accessible. (A list of accessibility evaluation tools is available at http://www.w3.org/WAI/ER/tools/complete. RAMP should be available in COSC 304 lab). Print out a copy of the evaluation report.
