Communication Strategies to Encourage Evidence-based Research
Effective communication begins with active listening. The senior nurse would listen to the new nurse and reflect upon her concerns and then mentor her while she is on the job. An empathic mentor can positively affect the newer nurse by encouraging her, guiding her, and teaching her best practices in providing patient care. (Vitale, 2018) By having open discussions and an approachable disposition, a senior nurse and mentor can educate the new nurse on how to properly research diagnoses and then how to research evidence-based practice to treat those conditions. Online modules to teach evidence-based strategies are another good way to communicate this important information. (Horntvedt et al. 2018) Nursing collaboration can also improve a nurse’s scope of practice and promotes cooperation in providing patient care. (Emich, 2018) The whole team should be part of communicating to the newer staff about how to do this research and grow as a nurse.
