Case Analysis Paper: Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting
For this case study, each student will complete and submit a minimum 11-12 page, typewritten, original analysis of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting using the APA format. Minimum number of diverse references (See Special Instructions at the bottom of the page) is 12. The case analysis paper must consist of a title page, table of contents, introduction, body of the paper addressing questions below, conclusion, and reference page. Paper must be at least 11-12 pages of double-spaced manuscript (with 1” margins all around), excluding title page, table of contents page, reference page, and any appendices. For consistency, the font size must be either size 12 Times New Roman or size 11 Courier New. Appendices are optional. See course syllabus for additional details. According to APA format, any references listed in the reference section must be cited in the paper. No exceptions. In preparation of the case analysis, your paper needs an introduction to introduce the topic and purpose of the analysis. Next, the main body of your paper will address the 9 tasks and questions listed below. Finally, your paper will have a separate conclusion or summary. I strongly recommend using headings to organize your paper (See APA guidelines on use of headings).
On December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza entered the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut and killed 20 young students and 6 staff members. Many questions remain about the motive of the shooter, but one thing is clearly apparent…the shooter, Adam Lanza, suffered from a number of physical and behavioral problems. A central focus of your analysis will be how an understanding of criminal behavioral theory could have aided in the early identification of Adam Lanza as a threat that could have led to a proactive response to intervene before Lanza could kill 20 students and 6 staff members. Here are the 9 tasks and questions that need to be addressed in the main body of the analysis paper:
- Provide a personal history of Adam Lanza to include an extensive review of Lanza’s behavioral and physical problems from birth to the time of the shootings.
- Based on criminal behavioral theory studied in this course and in your research, how do you explain the behavioral problems Adam Lanza exhibited? Were there early warning signs of future violence? What behavioral theory or concept do you believe best explains Adam Lanza’s actions on December 14, 2012? Explain.
- Could Lanza’s school system (Note: Adam Lanza was pulled out of school in 8th grade and completed high school through a combination of independent study, tutoring, and classes at a local college), local police, mental health professionals, neighbors, and parents have anticipated Adams Lanza’s actions on December 14, 2012? Explain why or why not?
- What is the main reason authorities and the parents failed to act on information and diagnoses that indicated Adam Lanza was becoming more dysfunctional and posed a credible threat to those around him and the local community. Explain. Be specific.
- Why did Lanza choose Sandy Hook Elementary School as his target?
- What is your evaluation on the response of school personnel and local and state police to the shooting?
- Assuming that police, neighbors and friends, and parents could have identified early the threat that Adam Lanza posed to students and staff at Sandy Hook Elementary, what could they have done to prevent or mitigate this shooting spree?
- Who bears the greatest responsibility for what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary and why?
- What recommendations would you make to prevent such tragedies in the future?
- What are the lessons learned from this tragedy as it relates to school security and the implications moving forward?
