One of the things that you notice when you start to look at children’s entertainment is that there is a very narrow window for the target audience for that content, because development happens so rapidly. A given TV show might have a target audience that’s just say, ages 2-4 (which is true of Sesame Street) or ages 4-7 (for a show like Arthur (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.). For this discussion, find some media content (Web site, video game, TV show…you could use the same Web site as you did in the last discussion if you want). Tell us about the content you’ve chosen, and then talk about the target audience for that product. What can you tell us about where that target audience is at developmentally? What is it about the content that would speak to that audience specifically, given their developmental level, but perhaps not work for kids at other developmental stages?

Note that often in popular discussions of “appropriateness” and children, decisions about what’s “appropriate” are based on value judgments of the content. So something isn’t appropriate for younger kids because it contains bad language, or violence, or sexual innuendos, or whatever. I’m not interested in those kinds of judgments (and in fact, those judgments are often misguided, as we may have an opportunity to discuss in the sex and media module). In other words, do NOT make an argument that the content of Arthur is appropriate for kids under 8 because there’s no swearing or violence. Instead, focus on developmental appropriateness. That is, think about what kids in the different stages would pay attention to, what they’d be interested in, what they’d be able to comprehend, what messages they’d remember, etc.

There are a few shows and games on the website for kids younger than the target age group, as well as for kids older than the target age, but it seems for the majority of the content 7-11 fits the range. The games on this website go along with the shows broadcasted on Cartoon Network and their shows really can be enjoyable for all ages (considering me and a lot of my friends still enjoy the shows), but it seems that its more geared to the age group of 7-11 because some of the language is more mature as well as themes such as themes of bullying, inappropriate jokes (bodily function jokes), dramatic and sometimes dark scenes or storylines. The games on Cartoon Network fall into this age range as well, with games that aren’t fundamental skill building games such as in the (proportional stage), yet strategy games, role playing games, and action games more driven towards a stories plot and revolves around sheer entrainment. I could still see children over the age of 11, perhaps to the age of 14 playing on this website, but I don’t think nearly as much, because they might see the material as mundane or not as realistic in terms of their better understandings of world views.
