Bullying is defined as a type of aggressive behavior that is designed to hurt another individual or a group of individuals (Smith, 2016, p. 519). Bullying may take place in one of the following locations school, home, social media, and in one’s community. In a school setting, being bullied may create a barrier for learning among school aged children. With elementary, middle, junior high, and high school children, it is important to remember that these individuals are influenced by their peers, environment, social interaction with others, social media, and social-cultural influences. Among school aged children who are being bullied, he or she may have experienced a physical altercation, teasing, felt threaten, and socially rejected by their peers. To address bullying in schools, the school social worker, counselor, and psychologist will need to be involved.
The school social worker will need to share with educators the different types of signs to look for when a child is being bullied or when a child is displaying withdrawal signs from bullying behaviors of others. In addition, the school social worker will need to assess the total school environment, teach prevention techniques followed by an outreach bullying hotline. This hotline should be used to report bullying issues that has occurred during or after school. Furthermore, instructors and students will need to be educated on the negative impact of bullying behaviors and enforce policies that will ensure that the school environment is safe.
School counselors may also be used to help eliminate bullying. Counselors will need to build a trusting relationship that will allow an individual to voice their concerns about bullying. A school counselor’s way of solving bullying behavior should be to meet with both the victim and bullier. Counseling services must be used to determine the cause of bullying and to determine the behavior that is affecting the individual. The school counselor should work with the school social workers, school directors, and teachers to create a positive setting for all students to learn in a healthy environment.
Individuals who have experienced being bullied have found other ways to cope with their negative experience by seeking help from a psychologist. During counseling a victim must be willing to share and to identify the most troubling act of bullying that he or she has experienced. If a person is a victim of bullying, he or she may experience a decrease in academic performance, low self-esteem, depression, isolation from peers and others, anxiety, suicidal ideation, truancy, or dropping out of school. Because of being bullied, some students may experience depression, anxiety, suicidal ideations, and low self-esteem. As a result, students may be referred to a psychologist or psychiatrist for additional mental health. In addition, the psychiatrist may prescribe an appropriate type of medication that will assist in the bullied recovery.
