These components will cover one main object which you should choose beforeyou begin. You should pick a textbook chapter, journal article, research report, or otherpiece of writing of equivalent length from your academic field. This can be a text assigned toyou from another course, from your research, or from your own interests, but should beacademically oriented.Writing from your perspective as a student and well-informed reader of the text at hand, youshould assess the purpose of your source text, address its quality, specify its notable features,and provide suggestions for its use. This will vary for each of you, but your goal is not topraise the work at hand, but to appraise it and offer suggestions about its implementation inits given context (i.e., within its field). You can consider any categories to address, but mustdiscuss the workâ€s prose style, use of language and jargon, and its accessibility. You shouldalso consider how the work is currently being used and what other uses it might be put to.Analytic Memo: Some of you may be familiar with analytic memos from other fields,but if not, the goal is to summarize, describe, and extract key information from agiven work or topic and offer analytic conclusions based on your observations andinsight. For this assignmentâ€s purposes, your first draft should be about two to threepages in length, though your revised version will be longer.Fact Sheet/Key Elements: This should be a one-page (and one page only) well-formatteddocument that provides an overview of the key elements present in your main text, aswell as any additional information that you feel necessary. This will have somerepetition from your analytic memo, but should be concise and well-structured, withsome emphasis on readability and delivering clear information.Cover Letter: This should be a letter of about one page in length, addressed to theperson most responsible for the work you are addressing (the teacher who assignedthe textbook, the director of your lab research, etc.), and should set up your memo aswell as guide your reader to your key findings.All of this will be audience- and context-specific, so you must have a specific audience inmind. You should reach substantive conclusions based on your observations and shouldsupport them by pointing to specifics.
