PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS
You will be writing a paper (suggested length: 6-8 pages)
clearly explaining the processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration by tracing the flow of energy from a heterotroph through an autotroph and back to its original source, the sun.
In outlining this process, you are required to connect the energy flow within the ecosystem structure and trace the dynamics from light energy to heat energy.
Your paper should include energy budgets and energy supplies from producers to quaternary consumers, using examples from your own diet (i.e. Vegetarian/Vegan, Paleo-diet, Gluten-free, etc).
Be sure to format your paper according to APA style guidelines.
1.Define heterotroph, autotroph, photosynthesis, and cellular respiration.
2.Describe the structures and processes in the heterotroph (from consumption through digestion) related to cellular respiration, including, at a minimum: digestive organs, absorption, glycolysis, Krebs cycle (citric acid cycle, tricarboxylic acid cycle), the electron transport chain (oxidative phosphorylation), cell membranes, cytosol, and mitochondrion.
3.Describe the structures and processes in the autotroph related to photosynthesis, including at a minimum: the chlorophyll, carotenoids, chloroplast, stroma, grana, and thylakoids
4.Describe the trophic levels of a food web (producers through quaternary consumers). Identify the trophic level(s) of autotrophs and heterotrophs.
5.Describe how energy is cycled through trophic levels of an ecosystem.
6.While your diet may or may not consist of a variety of foods from different trophic levels, from which trophic level do you receive the majority of your food? Describe how you came to this conclusion using five examples of foods from your diet.
7.Based on your current diet and the trophic level you determined in #6, calculate your caloric intake in kilocalories. Are you getting the most energy from your foods? Why or why not?
8.What changes could you make to your current diet to obtain more energy from the food you consume? Based upon the trophic level, how could you change your diet in order receive more energy from the food that you eat?
