Authentic Leadership and Team Leadership Approaches
Has anyone ever been dishonest with you? Have you been dishonest with anyone? Honesty in relationships is one of the foundations of the Authentic Leadership theory. As one of the more recently identified theories of leadership, a simple definition of Authentic Leadership is the focus of much research and debate. From an intrapersonal perspective to an interpersonal process and a developmental approach, Authentic Leadership traits are developed over a lifetime and are triggered by life events.
Like Authentic Leadership, Team Leadership is another recently identified theory of leadership. Where Authentic Leadership focuses on the trust developed between a leader and subordinates, Team Leadership theory identifies leadership as one of the most important influences for team effectiveness and success. This week, you learn about team/leader relationships and the impact that Authentic Leadership can have on those relationships.

- Compare the characteristics of leadership approaches or theories to Authentic Leadership
- Compare the characteristics of leadership approaches or theories to Team Leadership
- Analyze how the characteristics of Authentic Leadership and Team Leadership impact personal leadership style
Authentic Leadership and Team Leadership
Authentic Leadership is a relatively new leadership approach and as a result much more research is needed. There is no standard, accepted definition of Authentic Leadership but it can best be described as transparent, responsible to people’s needs, and adhering to a moral code. It is becoming more popular as a response to leadership failures in both the private and public sectors.
Teams have become more of a fixture in both the public and private sectors, and as a result, there is a greater interest in Team Leadership. Team Leadership posits that the critical function of leadership is to oversee the group, identify the problems, and take appropriate action. Team leadership is popular because it identifies the functions that a leader can share within the team.
For this Discussion, reflect on the leadership approaches or theories you have discussed throughout this course, select one of the approaches or theories that appeals to you. Consider the characteristics of your selected approach or theory. Consider the characteristics of Authentic Leadership and of Team Leadership.
