Background : To undertake a research project that involves human participants at university, you need to apply to a human research ethics committee for approval. As part of this, you need to provide a clear outline of your project and how you would undertake the research. You need to show awareness of ethical principles and identify potential safety risks (both to participants and researchers) and ways that you would address them. You need to convince the ethics committee that your project is well-designed, that it adds to current knowledge, that you have thought about the ethical implications of your proposed research, that you have planned ways to minimise potential risks to participants, and that the research is worthwhile.
This assignment uses some of the questions that are asked by the University of Canberra Human Research Ethics Committee (see: https://www.canberra.edu.au/research/ucresearch/integrityandethics/human-ethics).
Instructions : Review the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007, updated May 2015) ( http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/guidelines-publications/e72 ). Develop and write a mock ethics proposal for a qualitative research project in an area of interest. Using the supplied template, describe and justify the proposed research project. Include as data instruments and consent forms as appendices (e.g., interview protocol, information and consent forms).
