A common criticism of dialogue is that it is “on the nose.” It states too clearly what the character is thinking without filtering the thoughts through the personality and conflict. Write four lines of dialogue for Ashley and Nick. Ashley is a 16 year old cheerleader and Nick is the 18 year old football quarterback. Ashley wants to say “I have a crush on you.” That would be on the nose. So write four to six lines of dialogue to accomplish that task.
