Directions for Completion

Step 1. Utilizing online resources, collect 10-15 strategies for developing phonemic awareness and phonics. Identify the purpose or use of each strategy, including how diversity issues are addressed. Carefully document the source in APA format.

Step 2. Use course and online resources to develop 5-7 criteria for evaluating the strategies. Develop a Likert scale to determine point value. Create a chart for each strategy that shows the criteria, Likert scale categories, and scores for each criteria (See example). Total the score for each strategy.

Step 3. Rank the strategies according to the total point value. Select the top three strategies, and write a brief summary of why the strategy was selected, supporting each with a direct quote as to the reason(s) it is effective for the stated purpose.

Step 4. Imagine a parent-teacher conference. In a brief narrative, no more than 2-3 paragraphs, explain to the parent how these phonemic awareness and phonics strategies build early reading skills and how they can help at home.

Step 5. Submit the narrative description of the top 3 strategies, completed charts for the top 3 strategies, and parent conference insights along with references.
