Give examples from the text. Difference between the two sisters. Mama is an old woman with two daughters, Maggie and Dee. Although she is poor, she is an independent and strong woman living in a beautiful yard with Maggie when Dee is away in school. Maggie is a young girl who has a simple traditional life from the south; she is humble and innocent and has no education. She is contrasted with Dee who is educated and very successful. According to Walker (408-414), Maggie is shy and nervous when Dee is at home, she is embarrassed by the scars she sustained when she was burned in a house in the past. She is envious of Dee because, whatever Dee demands, her mother provides for her, for example, she puts on expensive clothes and her mother describes her as very beautiful, she says that God designed her legs to be beautiful. Walker (408-414) portrays how Mama hates Maggie; Mama describes her as unattractive native African who is unintelligent. She scorns her because she was burned and sustained scars which makes her ugly. She is described as not bright because she didn’t go to school. It is concluded by Walker (408-414) that, although Maggie lacks the advantages that Dee enjoys, she is aware of her heritage and carries her family tradition which her grandmother left behind. On the other hand, Mama is proud of Dees’ achievements although she is uncomfortable with her selfish behavior.
