General Instructions
Professional nurses must be equipped to critique scholarly literature and discern its value for application to practice. Select one current, quantitative scholarly article related to your PICOT question. Appraise the article using the General Appraisal Overview for All Studies Tool (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2023, Appendix C; see also Box 6.1 in Chapter 6). Summarize your appraisal of the article in your own words.

Yes, the statistical methods were suitable because the researchers used percentages, averages, and correlation tests to clearly present the survey findings. These methods matched the type of numerical data collected from the participants. The statistics also helped support the conclusions and made the results easier to interpret.
Were there any untoward events during the conduct of the study?The researchers did not report any major problems or unexpected events during the study. The research process appeared to be completed safely without negatively affecting the caregivers or patients involved. Ethical guidelines were followed carefully to reduce the chance of complications during the study.

Explain why and how you could use the study results in your practice to make a difference in client outcomes. If you cannot use the results, why not?I could use study results in my future nursing practice by teaching caregivers more effective methods for repositioning patients, performing skin checks, and preventing pressure injuries. Providing caregivers with stronger education could lower the risk of complications and improve patient comfort and recovery. I could also encourage communication and teamwork between nurses/nurse aids and caregivers when caring for patients with spinal cord injuries.

The article selected for this Collaboration Café : “The Establishment of Evidence-Based Practice Competencies for Practicing Registered Nurses and Advanced Practice Nurses in Real-World Clinical Settings: Proficiencies to Improve Healthcare Quality, Reliability, Patient Outcomes, and Costs” by Melnyk et al. (2014). This quantitative study focused on developing evidence-based practice (EBP) competencies for registered nurses and advanced practice nurses working in clinical settings. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to develop evidence-based practice competencies for registered nurses and advanced practice nurses that healthcare organizations could use to improve patient care and healthcare quality. Study Design: The researchers used a quantitative Delphi survey design. This method allowed experts to reach agreement on important EBP competencies for nurses and advanced practice nurses. Ethics Review: Participation in the survey was voluntary, and participant responses remained confidential during the study. Research Question or Hypothesis: The study examined whether evidence-based practice mentors could reach consensus on core EBP competencies needed for nurses and advanced practice nurses in clinical settings. Study Aims: The main aim of the study was to create a standardized set of EBP competencies that could be used in healthcare systems and clinical practice. Sampling Technique, Sample Size, and Characteristics: The researchers used purposive sampling to recruit participants. The sample included 80 evidence-based practice mentors from different healthcare settings across the United States. Independent Variable: The independent variable was the proposed evidence-based practice competency statements. Dependent Variables: The dependent variables were participant agreement, consensus, and clarity regarding the competency statements. Data Analysis: The researchers used descriptive statistics and consensus analysis during two rounds of the Delphi survey process. The statistical methods were appropriate for this type of study because the goal was to achieve expert consensus regarding EBP competencies. The study reached full consensus after two survey rounds. Application to Advanced Nursing Practice: This study is important because evidence-based practice helps improve patient outcomes and healthcare quality. The findings showed that nurses and advanced practice nurses need strong EBP skills to provide safe and effective patient care. As a future family nurse practitioner, I can apply these findings by using current research and evidence-based guidelines when making clinical decisions. I can also support evidence-based care through patient education, quality improvement, and collaboration with other healthcare professionals. The study also showed the importance of mentorship and continuing education in helping nurses strengthen evidence-based practice skills. Developing these competencies can help improve patient care and support better healthcare outcomes.
