A significant client-focused problem I aim to address as an advanced practice nurse is supporting patients in managing hypertension. Blood pressure management typically requires lifelong attention, and without intervention, hypertension often progresses. This condition represents a critical quality measure, affecting a substantial proportion of adults in the United States and ranking as a leading global health concern. Hypertension is frequently referred to as the “silent killer†because it is often asymptomatic until severe complications develop, underscoring the necessity of routine screening and monitoring in primary care. Many individuals remain undiagnosed or inadequately managed, which contributes to a range of additional health morbidities. The consequences of uncontrolled hypertension include stroke, heart attack, heart failure, chronic kidney disease, and vision loss. Complications can be life-altering and significantly increase healthcare costs through hospitalizations, medication use, and long-term care. This issue is particularly important to me because certain populations are disproportionately affected, highlighting the need for culturally competent and accessible interventions that advanced practice nurses can provide. As a future family nurse practitioner (FNP), I intend to prioritize patient-centered approaches to address these challenges. By proactively identifying patients at risk and providing education on effective blood pressure management, I can help prevent or delay complications and empower individuals to adopt self-care strategies. These efforts will ultimately reduce the healthcare burden and improve population health outcomes.

Miracle,
Suicide is a persistent if not rising health concern in many of the communities in which we live. It often feels like a missed opportunity to make a life-saving intervention. Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (CSSRS) is a tool I have brought to students†attention over the years. It is not only evidence based but its application is user-friendly and can be done by any community member. Mental health practitioners are leaders in the initiatives to advocate suicide screening, but I also think it can be a universal initiative for all healthcare providers, no matter what the setting is.
Miracle and Class,
I am adding an article link discussing suicide education for NPs. Please consider reading the article attached.
Based on your comprehension, perceptions, and experiential knowledge reflect and offer your responses to the prompts below:
Based on the discussion in the beginning of the article, do these statistics change your perception of how to better reach patients who are considering self-harm?
Based on the limitations discussed in the study, how could suicide education be implemented as a continuing education for NPs?
Do you think suicide education would be an initiative making a difference for patients and increase referrals to mental healthcare potentially increasing the quality of care being offered to many patients?
