Course concepts that resonated most with me include systems-based practice and structural competency, political competence and advocacy, and leadership for intentional change. Understanding how policies, payment structures, and social determinants shape patient outcomes highlighted the need to address upstream factors to improve health equity (Castillo et al., 2020). The emphasis on political competence reinforced that APNs must engage in legislative and regulatory processes to translate clinical insight into effective policy (American Nurses Association [ANA], 2021).
As a masterâ€s-prepared nurse, I will apply these concepts by leading interdisciplinary initiatives to reduce ED boarding and expand crisis stabilization resources, advocating for scope-of-practice and reimbursement changes, and integrating telehealth and community partnerships to improve access to behavioral health. Course assignments policy analysis, case studies, and implementation planning built practical skills in stakeholder analysis, evidence-based recommendation development, and outcome measurement, preparing me to advocate for positive, sustainable change (Champagne & Carlucci, 2023).
This coursework directly supports Program Outcome 5 by strengthening my ability to promote compassionate, evidence-based, collaborative advanced nursing practice through policy translation, quality improvement, and interprofessional collaboration (ANA, 2021). It also advances AACN Essential 10.3k Influence intentional change guided by leadership principles and theories by requiring application of change frameworks, coalition-building, and evaluation planning in real-world policy and practice projects (Castillo et al., 2020; Champagne & Carlucci, 2023).

Looking back on this course, I can honestly say it has deepened my understanding of the nurse practitioner role—not just as a clinician, but as a leader within the healthcare system. One of the biggest takeaways for me was how leadership and ethics are part of everyday practice, not just something tied to formal leadership positions. Working in an ambulatory clinic, I see daily how ethical decision-making, access to care, and system-level challenges directly affect patient outcomes. This course helped me connect those real-world experiences to broader concepts like health equity, structural competency, and policy influence.
Another concept that really stood out to me was health policy and advocacy. Before this course, I didnâ€t fully realize how much policies shape what we can do for our patients, especially when it comes to access, insurance limitations, and care coordination. Learning about this made me realize that improving patient outcomes requires involvement beyond the clinical setting—it also means understanding and influencing policy when possible (Milstead & Short, 2021). It shifted my mindset from just “providing care†to also being responsible for advocating for better systems.
I was also especially impacted by discussions around social determinants of health and health disparities. In my practice, I frequently see patients struggle with issues like transportation, delayed follow-ups, or difficulty accessing specialty care. This course helped me better understand these challenges and approach care more holistically. Instead of focusing only on the diagnosis, I now think more about the barriers patients face and how I can help address them through education, resources, and care coordination (American Association of Colleges of Nursing [AACN], 2021).
As I prepare for my future role as a masterâ€s-prepared nurse practitioner, I plan to apply these concepts in very practical ways. In the ambulatory setting, this means being more proactive in identifying gaps in care, such as missed follow-ups or barriers related to insurance and access. I also want to strengthen my collaboration with the healthcare team to implement evidence-based strategies that improve continuity of care and patient outcomes. At the same time, I feel more confident speaking up and contributing to discussions that can improve clinic workflows and overall patient care.
The course learning activities—especially the Collaboration Café discussions and policy-related assignments—really helped me grow toward Program Outcome 5, which focuses on advocating for positive health outcomes through compassionate, evidence-based, and collaborative practice. These activities pushed me to think critically, apply evidence, and engage with different perspectives. They also reinforced how important teamwork and communication are in addressing complex healthcare challenges. As noted by Danis et al. (2021), integrating ethics and leadership into healthcare systems plays an important role in improving both patient outcomes and organizational decision-making.
In terms of leadership development, I feel that I strengthened AACN Essentials Competency 10.3k: influencing intentional change. This course showed me that change in healthcare doesnâ€t just happen—it requires planning, collaboration, and strong leadership. In a busy ambulatory clinic, even small changes—like improving workflow or patient adherence—require clear communication, staff involvement, and addressing resistance. I learned that successful change depends on building trust within the team and aligning shared goals around patient care. Haque (2021) highlights that responsible leadership in healthcare involves guiding teams through complex challenges while maintaining a focus on ethical, patient-centered outcomes, which strongly reflects what I have learned in this course.
Overall, this course has helped me grow both professionally and personally. I feel more confident in my ability to advocate for patients, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, and contribute to meaningful improvements in healthcare delivery. Most importantly, I now see my future role as a nurse practitioner as not just treating patients, but also leading change and promoting health equity in everyday practice.
