1) DISCUSSION QUESTION

“The Market and Your Decision to Go to College”

The market for higher education is determining the key questions of what gets produced, how it is produced, how much is produced, and who gets how much.

Start your discussion by responding to these questions:

  • Why do you think that more and more students are going to college when, in fact, the price of a college education is increasing? (Be sure to use the models of supply and demand to explain your answer.)
  • In what ways have changes in the job market influenced your assessment of the value of an education? (Do you have more choices or options?)

Talk with your peers:

  • Reply to a classmate — was their reasoning similar to yours?

I think more students are going to college because more jobs are demanding it as a part of the requirements. In order to get a decent paying job, most of the time it requires us to have at least a bachelor’s degree. This means that the supply (college degrees) is increasing due to the demand (better paying jobs) increasing.

In order to do what I do now at my job which is a special market banker, you do not have to have a degree. I have recently been offered the chance to apply for a promotion which will offer double of what I make now. The only thing stopping me is the fact that I do not have my bachelor’s degree as of yet. The manager in the department is actually willing to still offer me the job upon completion of my collge degree plan. Due to most jobs requiring a degree to even be considered, I think this is the reason that more and more people are going back to college. It is most certainly one of the reasons that I have chosen to further my education.

Hello Professor and class. I think more often we find students going to college because they have had it engrained into them that they will not get a good job without a college degree. The fact that more and more are going to school is exactly why the prices continue to rise. It is a great demonstration of supply and demand in action. The schools know that more people are needing it so their response to that market need is to raise the prices. It’s not that the education is really any different now than in the past, just that it is wanted more. Because of the greater number of students, the schools can not only charge more but can also be more selective on who they grant admission too. An example of this is Kennesaw State University near my home. When I graduated college KSU was the place that everyone went to if you couldn’t get in anywhere else or didn’t really know what you wanted to study so you went there just to work on your core. Now, applying there does not guarantee admission by any means. UGA and GT are very similar. I know of kids who graduated with my son’s that had 4.0 GPA, athletics, clubs etc and were still denied admission or wait-listed.

I think some schools also add classes for no other reason than to make a few extra dollars. My oldest son is a college baseball player. They have games 3-4 days a week during the season and during off season have 5am workouts 4 days a week. Despite this, they are all required to take a “walking” and “running” class that counts toward credit hours which means having to pay tuition for it. This seems ludicrous to me.

The job market has changed how education is viewed and valued. I went into the service straight out of high school with no intention of going to college. I ended up getting my associates degree mainly because part of the degree program would send me to the police academy and make get me an internship, making it easier to find a full-time police job. The associates degree was all I ever needed but I found when transitioning to the corporate side of things that experience, no matter how much there was, did not trump those that had schooling. When I applied for my current company it came down to me with 10 years of field, investigative and command experience against another applicant who had 1 year of police experience, which was spent in records department, but that had a master’s degree. Needless to say I was beat out for the position because of the degree. I did end up getting the next position a couple of months later and have now been there almost 16 years. The person w/ the master’s degree only lasted 6 months before realizing they couldn’t handle it and quitting. The main reason I’m pursuing my bachelor’s degree now is because we have an education requirement now at the company for management positions, so as a condition of my promotion a coup[le of years ago I have to take a certain amount of credit hours to show I’m pursuing my business degree.
